About this camp

The KEYS (Keep Engaging Youth in Science) Research Internship is a prestigious 7-week summer program at the University of Arizona's BIO5 Institute, designed for motivated high school students with a strong interest in interdisciplinary bioscience, biomedicine, and data science. Interns gain hands-on research experience by working on real-world projects under the mentorship of University of Arizona scientists. The program begins with a comprehensive training week, covering bioscience methodology, data science techniques, and science literacy, including topics like reading research papers, scientific writing, and presentation skills. For the subsequent six weeks, students are immersed in a research lab, matched with a University of Arizona faculty member based on their interests. Throughout the internship, students develop critical laboratory skills, learn programming languages (such as Python and R), analyze big data, and engage in scientific communication. The program culminates in a research showcase where interns present their findings to the academic community, friends, and family through poster presentations and a KEYS Slam (a two-minute presentation). This experience helps students determine if a research path is right for them, builds valuable laboratory and data science skills, and provides 3 units of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) credit, along with assured admission to the W.A. Franke Honors College at the University of Arizona.
